First I want to explain what is file association . Name of any file is made of two parts 1.name & 2.extension . Extension is important because file association depends on it . When you double click a file in windows , due to its extension it opens a program that can read or change that type of file . When a program is set to be the default program to open a type of file , we say that type of file is associated with this program . Now I show you how to change the files association and add something to the right-click menu .
Now resume that in my system , .htm(l) files are associated with Front Page , so when I double click a html file , Front Page opens it and then I can edit the file . Now I want to set the association to Internet Explorer and add another command to right click menu of html files . To associate a file with a program , there is some ways . The easiest is to hold down <Shift> button when right clicking the file and then select "open with" , then choose the program and select "Always use this program to open this type of file" option and then press OK . Another way is to work with registry which is hard and dangerous . A third way is to work with "folder option\file types" menu in explorer . Now I will show you how to change associations or right-click menu .
First open a folder or My Computer . In Win98 , select "View" menu and then "Folder option " command ; In others (Me , 2000 , NT , XP ) select "Tools" menu and then "Folder option " command . Now click "File types" tab and from the large list select the type of file you want to modify . I select "Html Document" :
Now click "Edit" . A new window opens . First I must add a command which is related to IE(internet explorer) . Click "New" and then in the Action field enter "open in IE" , in the Application field enter for example "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe" or click Browse and then select the IE and then click OK . Now you must set this new command as the default . Select the new command and click "Set Default" , now this command is the default command for double-click . I want to Add another command to open the file in notepad .
You can also add commands to Drive or Folder right-click menu . For example try to add "Defragment" command for drives . If you want to change icon the type of file , just click "Change Icon" on the top .
